Sacramento is home to a welcoming community known for its commitment to improving opportunities for young people. City Year is proud to work alongside teachers and community partners to support students across the city.
While Sacramento is the fastest-growing city in California and is widely known for being a vibrant center for history, government, finance, and medicine, some students in Sacramento face significant challenges every day. The Sacramento City Unified School District serves more than 43,000 students across 77 Ƶ.
Being a part of City Year changed my life/career trajectory. Working with the students as a corps member is such a unique and special experience to have. I learned so much from my students and will never forget my year of service!

Your corps experience
City Year is a key partner to Sacramento Ƶ in creating equitable learning opportunities for all students and develop the city’s future leaders. AmeriCorps members support teachers and staff in delivering instruction that serves the development of the whole child and is responsive to the diverse racial, cultural and linguistic needs of Sacramento youth.
A close-knit community with ample opportunities to develop meaningful personal and professional relationships, Sacramento is an ideal place to serve. By engaging students, families and community organizations, City Year helps Sacramento Ƶ to ensure students are at school and on time as part of SCUSD’s districtwide attendance campaign, and helps students get caught up in reading and math through targeted tutoring.
Serving in Sacramento Ƶ
City Year partners with five Ƶ in the Sacramento City Unified School District and two Ƶ in the St. HOPE Charter Schools system. Our students face some of the greatest systemic educational inequities in the region, with 87% coming from economically disadvantaged households and 97% being students of color. Our AmeriCorps members partner with teachers to add more support and to help create learning environments where students can build on their strengths and fully engage in their learning.
Work with a committed and diverse group of seven–15 City Year AmeriCorps members who share your passion for service and personal growth. You will be supported throughout your year by your impact manager who will coach you on having an impactful year on students and growing as a professional. You will also collaborate with your team leader, a returning AmeriCorps member who will provide mentorship and guidance to you after being in your position last year.
Professional development
City Year Sacramento AmeriCorps members receive three weeks of intensive training during pre-service training at the start of their service year, where they get oriented to City Year’s mission and culture while learning the fundamental skills necessary to get started successfully in Ƶ.
In addition to tutoring strategies, AmeriCorps members also learn more about the systemic inequities facing our students and how to make the most of their time in Sacramento.
Once service begins in Ƶ, learning doesn’t stop! The entire corps convenes every other week for learning and development days, which focus on advanced tutoring strategies, guided reflection on their service and civic leadership, and professional development skills such as GRE study groups, résumé workshops and interview coaching.
Throughout the year City Year Sacramento works with our community partners to bring guest speakers and workshops to our AmeriCorps members. Some examples include budgeting with Bank of America, emotional first aid with Kaiser Permanente and 18-minute networking, a speed-dating style professional networking event.
Community involvement
Create a positive climate of high expectations and engagement through coordinated service events with area nonprofits and business partners. Past opportunities have included school rejuvenation projects, volunteering at the River City Food Bank and serving as safety support for the annual Walk4Literacy.
