Making Service to Students Possible
City Year Orlando is grateful to Heart of Florida United Way for their continued investment and partnership in our work during the 2020-2021 school year. This last year has been extremely challenging, but City Year Orlando is proud to have been able to serve students in-person and virtually from the first day of school. Although our day-to-day service might have looked different, the fundamentals of our work remained the same.
Through the support of Heart of Florida United Way, City Year OrlandoAmeriCorps memberswere able tocontinuebuildingrelationships with students, engagethem in learning and providethe one-on-one support they neededintheclassroom –bothonline and in-person – all day, every day for the entire school year.
During this challenging time, our 80 AmeriCorps members continued toinspireuswith their dedication and commitment to supportingstudents in eight OCPS partner Ƶ.Naomi Sanchez, City Year Orlando AmeriCorps member, isone exampleofhowa strong relationship canmake all the differencefor a student.
“It is not easy being the new student in class, especially during this school year. Kevin’s* firstfew weeksof class were filled with anger, frustration, and confusion. It was extremely challenging to get him to share his thoughts without pushing me away and closing himself off. With empathy and a lot of patience,I was able togain his trust andbuild a strong relationship withKevin.Together, we have learned the importance of communicating and listening to our feelings.Icanconfidently say the student I now see when I walk into my classroom is confident, brilliant, and engaged. I couldnotbe prouder of Kevin and his journey from being the confused new student to one of the top students in his class.”
At City Year Orlando, the relationships with our Ƶ,studentsand partnersare alwaysinthe forefront of ourwork. Our AmeriCorps members arepositioned toforge caring, consistent, and positive relationships with the students they serve every day. It’s through incredible partners like Heart of Florida United Waythat helped make our service possible this year.
THANK YOU TO OUR PARTNERS
